Honey Dripper

      Savannah, Georgia, 1902

Little arms ripped out
of their sockets,
belly devoured down
to the backbone
while Honey was at work.
How could a dog named Eddie
do such a thing?
Sheriff said it was her fault
for not feeding the animal.
Is there such a thing
as food for thought?
"Had no business leaving
them kids alone nohow."

Honey Dripper, Honey Dripper
(whose legal name
was Eartha Romance)
had three children -
Mona Lisa Romance
Paul Romance
Molly Romance -
all born under morning
stars and out of wedlock,
and each to a different
silent or lost father.

One's dead
and the other two
they say are out there
in the State's hands.
